Ukraine’s floating farms
There must be a place on this world where gravity is much, much less. Often I’m struggling to get my buildings to have that light and floating appearance. So when I saw a Russian movie, featuring these farm-buildings from the Ukranaine that defy gravity I was thunderstruck.
In this movie (the name of which I unfortunately forgot, so please any suggestions?) the building was being used as a kind of potato or grain-sorting station. Trucks would stop underneath to be filled.
I like the way industrial buildings are ‘designed’-or- more accurately: aren’t designed.. The only thing of importance is the way it will function, a skin for the machine inside. Form isn’t an issue at all; Form Follows Function to the Max so to speak. (Louis Sullivan – “Form Follows Function”). By making the statement about the absence of form, design retrieves its freedom. So everything is possible, there is no ugly and no beautiful, therefore the greatest buildings just grow in vague industrial areas or, in this case; farmlands.

The secret of this particular sorting-station?
Spoiler alert:
Story is, it was situated near the town of Krasnosilka in Ukraine, not far away from the city of Odessa. By the time this picture was taken, the building was being dismantled and some of the supports were already removed. But because the bins were empty, the cantilever force was strong enough to withstand gravity for a while.

De zwevende boerderijen van de Oekraïne
Er moet een plaats op de wereld zijn waar de zwaartekracht veel, veel minder is. Vaak moet ik halsbrekende toeren uithalen om mijn gebouwen die lichte en zwevende uitstraling te geven. Dus toen ik een Russische film zag, met deze gebouwen die de zwaartekracht tartten zat ik gelijk op het puntje van mijn stoel.
In deze film (waarvan de naam ik helaas vergeten, dus aub suggesties?) werd het gebouw gebruikt als een soort van aardappelen of graan sorteerstation. Vrachtwagens konden eronder stoppen om te worden gevuld.
Ik hou van de manier waarop industriële gebouwen zijn ontworpen -of-beter gezegd: niet zijn ontworpen .. Het enige wat van belang is, is de manier waarop het functioneert, een huid voor een machine. Vorm is totaal geen issue, Vorm volgt functie tot de Max’ zo te zeggen. (Louis Sullivan – “Form Follows Function”). Door als uitgangspunt de afwezigheid van vorm te nemen, krijgt vormgeving haar ultieme vrijheid terug. Alles is mogelijk, er is geen lelijk en geen mooi, de mooiste gebouwen ontstaan in vage industriële gebieden of, in dit geval; landbouwgebieden.

Het geheim van deze bijzondere sorteer-station?

Het verhaal gaat, dat dit gebouw dichtbij de stad Krasnosilka in Oekraïne lag, niet ver van de stad Odessa. Tegen de tijd dat deze foto werd genomen, werd het gebouw ontmanteld en een deel van de dragers waren al verwijderd. Maar omdat de bakken waren leeg, was de hefboomwerking van de fundering sterk genoeg om de zwaartekracht een tijdlang te weerstaan.
